Manifesting ideas in everyday building

Now Here is an award-winning Los Angeles-based office working on a range of scales from objects to buildings. Formed in 2017, Now Here is equally interested in the tangible and intangible, the abstract and the material, but mostly in the tension between them. Both “Nowhere” and “Now Here”, the work of the office looks to ideas and things to loosen conventions and generate new possibilities in architecture.

Katy Barkan formed Now Here in 2017 as a studio that would bring together multiple modes of practice from drawings to objects, texts to buildings. Katy is faculty at UCLA where she has been teaching since 2014. She received the Rome Prize in Architecture at the American Academy in Rome in 2020 and has exhibited her work at the Venice Biennale, the UCLA galleries, and at the American Academy in Rome. Her built projects and writing have been published in Architectural Record, Architect’s Newspaper, and Log Magazine, among others. Before joining the faculty of UCLA, Katy taught at Harvard’s GSD where she also received her M.Arch.

Hannah Hortick joined Now Here in 2022 and is the project lead on several residential projects. Alongside this Hannah teaches architecture at Woodbury University. She received her M. Arch from UCLA.
